Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, the visitor’s IP address, and browser user agent to help detect spam.

An anonymized hash of your email address may be sent to the Gravatar service. Their privacy policy is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture becomes public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the site, avoid uploading images containing embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors may download and extract location data from images on the website.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you may choose to save your name, email, and website in cookies for convenience. These cookies last one year.

A temporary cookie is set on the login page to check browser cookie support. It contains no personal data and is deleted when you close your browser.

When you log in, we set cookies to store your login information and display preferences. Login cookies last two days. Screen option cookies last one year. “Remember Me” extends login persistence to two weeks. Logging out removes the login cookies.

If you edit or publish an article, a cookie storing the post ID is saved in your browser. It expires after one day.

You may unsubscribe at any time using the link included in every email. Your subscription data is retained until you unsubscribe, after which it is permanently deleted from our mailing list.

SMS/Text Messaging Privacy

We use an SMS/text messaging platform to send ministry-related messages to individuals who have opted in. When you provide your mobile number and consent to receive SMS messages, we may use it to send:

  • Church announcements and important updates.
  • Event reminders and schedule changes.

What personal information is collected for SMS: Your mobile phone number, optional name, and your consent preference.

How SMS information is used: Your mobile number is used solely to send church-related SMS messages you have requested or agreed to receive.

Who SMS information is shared with: Your SMS information may be processed by our SMS service provider solely to deliver messages on our behalf. It is not used by them for their own marketing.

SMS consent is not shared with third parties or affiliates. We do not sell, rent, or transfer your SMS consent or phone number to any third parties for their own purposes.

SMS Terms & Conditions

By opting into SMS from a web form or other medium, you are agreeing to receive SMS messages from St. James United Methodist Church. This includes SMS messages for church announcements, event updates, reminders, and ministry alerts.

Prayer requests submitted as “private” are kept confidential and are not shared publicly on our website or in worship services.

Donations

If you make an online donation, your payment information is processed securely by third-party payment processors. We do not store or have access to your full payment details such as full credit card numbers or bank account information.

Photography & Media Policy

Photos or videos taken during church services or events may be used for ministry purposes, including our website and social media. If you wish to opt out of photos or request removal of an image in which you appear, please contact the church office.

Child & Minor Protection

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 without parental consent. If a parent or guardian believes that a child has provided personal information on our site, they may contact us to request its removal, and we will promptly delete it.

How long we retain your data

Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely so we can automatically recognize and approve follow-up comments instead of holding them for moderation.

For registered users, we store the personal information they provide in their user profile. Users may view, edit, or delete their personal information at any time, except for usernames. Website administrators may also access and modify profile information.

Newsletter and SMS subscription data is retained until you unsubscribe or opt out. Event and form submissions may be retained as long as necessary to support the related ministry, or as required for legal, security, or administrative purposes.

Your rights under GDPR (where applicable)

If you are located within the European Union, you have the right to request:

  • An exported file of the personal data we hold about you.
